The New Orleans meeting featured an invited session in honor of Michael R. Resetarits, FRI’s technical director. Invited speakers of the session were Henry Z. Kister, Daniel R. Summers, Ralph Weiland, Lowell Pless, Robert J. Miller, James R. Whiteley, and Tony J. Cai. The session had a peak attendance of 90 attendees. A bibliography of Mike Resetarits including his several distillation and absorption contributions is available here.

Distillation and absorption area sessions included advances in tray technology, advances in packing technology, and advances in improving the energy efficiency of distillation columns, modeling, and control.

Four papers were presented on Mega towers – towers greater than 10 m (33 ft) in diameter. Design and trouble shooting of these mega towers sparked exciting discussions among the audience.

FRI presented four papers in a tutorial session for Young Professionals (YP) at the end of main programming of the distillation sessions. This session was well attended (around 40 attendees). Distillation fundamentals, trays, structured packing, extraction, absorption, and gamma scanning fundamentals were discussed.
