Models for Liquid Head and Pressure Drop for Valve Trays

New models for pressure drop and liquid head for valve trays are presented in this report. The models presented in this report supersede those that were developed in TR-201S. The models for pressure drop and liquid head presented in the current report (TR-214) are applicable to both single-weight and dual-weight valves as well as fixed valves. The pressure drop model was developed using the balance-point approach and accounts rigorously for the gradual opening of moving valves and can also handle fixed valves. The model was developed using a large dataset containing several single-weight and dual-weight valves and was validated on fixed valves. Model development also included data on two-pass trays. Overall, the model predicts the pressure drop on 10 different valve tray designs and a total of 983 runs from the FRI Database with a mean absolute relative error (MARE) of 13.0% over wide ranges of test systems as well as vapor and liquid rates.
 
For predicting the liquid head, the FRI-Colwell model for sieve trays was revised for valve trays. The refitting of the FRI-Colwell model for valve trays was also based on a large dataset on liquid head data containing 10 valve tray designs and a wide range of vapor and liquid rates. The model provided reliable predictions on these different tray designs.
 
The models for pressure drop and liquid head presented in this report are an important update to the FRI models and correlations for valve trays. The new models will soon be available in DRP. In addition, an Excel-based template is provided with this topical report to facilitate liquid head and pressure drop calculations in both English and SI units. A short video describing the excel template for these models is also available.
